Gran OM Meets Chicago:
Contemporary Political Mexican Poster Art
Friday, August 15 – September 14, 2014
In collaboration with Cobalt Studio and Pilsen Out Post, Mexico City based artist Gran OM debuts his solo exhibition, "Gran OM meets Chicago".

Mexico City’s most recognized wheat paste and poster artist. Working in Mexico’s rich tradition of the political poster, and contemporary gig poster design. Gran OM, Omar Inzunza will exhibit for the first time in Chicago at Cobalt Studio. Creating a wheat paste installation and displaying his posters, Gran OM transcends the worlds of propaganda and street art. His contemporary aesthetics reflect a rich commentary on today’s social issues.
As one of Mexico’s most respected music video, film directors and multi media creators. Gran OM has his finger on the pulse of contemporary social political themes that are affecting communities today. Coinciding with his visit to Chicago throughout the month of August, he will also be creating two site-specific murals in Pilsen. Dates and locations are to be announced. Cobalt Studio and Pilsen Outpost welcomes Gran OM for his first solo exhibition in Pilsen.
Join us for the opening reception on Friday, August 15, 2014 from 6 – 10pm. "Gran OM Meets Chicago" will be open to the public through September 14 at Cobalt Studio 1950 W. 21st Street, Chicago. IL 60608. This event is free and open to the public.

EFFIGY by Gary L.White

COBALT STUDIO is proud to present
EFFIGY by Gary L.White

EFFIGY by Gary L.White
April 4th, 2014
Opening Reception: Friday, April 4, 5-10pm
Open Hours: To be announced

The collection of ceramic sculptures, explores the overlapping of time, generations,Cultures, the spiritual and non spiritual. The religious and secular.
It is a look into the universal idea of identity, and what it means in a postmodern world, through the lens of the Native/Black Indian southern experience.

A famous Quote by southern writer William Faulkner states that "The past is never really past." The idea of the past being just as much apart of the present,as well as the future is the bases for Effigy, the current body of work of Nashville Based Artist Gary L.White.

Gary L. White’s heritage is just about as all-American as you can get — he counts Cherokee, Creek and African-American among his bloodlines — and the artist credits this melting-pot background as a major influence in his work. A graduate of Watkins College of Art, Design & Film, White is exhibiting a new collection of clay sculptures made in his Nashville studio.

COBALT STUDIO hosts an opening reception on Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 5-10pm at 1950 W 21st Street, Chicago, IL. ACRE and COBALT STUDIO are proud to present PURE BLOOD / new work by MANDY CANO VILLALOBOS, the next installment in ACRE's year-long series of exhibitions by 2013 ACRE summer residents.

Pure Blood

by Mandy Cano Villalobos
We are a people of ethnic amalgamations and historical palimpsests. We claim distant ancestral origins to affirm our identities, while concepts of Purity and Otherness dwindle with each generation. Pure Blood calls attention to these uncertainties. The works included weave religious narratives with colonial pasts and immigration presents, to question our society’s fluctuating identities and affiliations.
Limpeza de Sangre (“Cleanliness of Blood”): Following the mass expulsion of Jews and Muslims during the late 1400s, Spain instituted laws of Limpieza de sangre. These laws distinguished the Jews and Muslims who had converted to Christianity from those who could trace their religious affiliation through family lineage. Having more to do with politics and ancestry than faith, Limpieza de sangre provided the grounds for extreme prejudice against those of “unclean blood”. During the colonization of the Americas, the ideas behind Limpieza de sangre were transferred to a caste system that further built upon discrimination.
With these reconfigured shirts I examine the present-day manifestations of such views. Each shirt, given to me by a Latin American immigrant, was once worn for daily work. I have then unstitched and torn apart each shirt, re-forming it into a fragmented quilt. Referencing the uncleanliness Judaic and Muslim traditions have associated with pigs (and in turn, the pig’s redemptive connotations within a Christian tradition), I then soaked the piece-meal shrouds in pig’s blood. Questions arise. What is clean and un-clean? Who designates these definitions, and who lives by them? How have our cultural, ethnic and historical identities formed our current prejudices? And, in light of the influx of immigrants to the United States, who is asking these questions, and to whom?
Cuzco School: The Cuzco School was a painting institution established by Spanish colonialists in the New World (Peru). The school’s objective, to teach indigenous subjects a European painting style, utilized art-making as a vehicle for imperialist gain. I repurpose the pig as a dual signifier for redemption and filth, branding the foot with decorative designs appropriated from paintings produced within the Cuzco tradition.
